About

Cynthia Friedman built her reputation by providing high-quality design for all clients, which range from national magazines to regional theater companies. As a professional, she creates sophisticated, strategically focused design solutions that consistently achieve the objectives of her clientele. This level of expertise is the result of a rich and diverse career working with leaders in the publishing and online world.

Early in her career, Ms. Friedman was the Art Director for the Yale Repertory Theater, where she developed expertise creating conceptual images to illustrate plays with highly abstract ideas. It was here that Ms. Friedman honed her vision for interpreting content that continues today.

For several decades Ms. Friedman built a respected career in art direction for premier magazines at the Hearst Publishing Group and the McGraw-Hill Companies, including Businessweek. Later she became the Design Director for AARP’s Modern Maturity, the largest-circulation consumer magazine in the U.S.

After 2000, Ms. Friedman expanded her interests beyond the magazine world to include the full spectrum of creative services, such as corporate identity, collateral materials and website design. At Washington’s Eason Associates, Ms. Friedman developed expertise in brand identity development and corporate communications for clients including the Smithsonian Institution and the Greater Washington Society for Association Executives. She has had extensive experience in production management and “green” print production. Currently she is the Art Director and Director of Institutional Projects for the University of Maryland University College, orchestrating the production of more than 700 projects annually.

Cynthia Friedman received her B.S. in Design from Cornell University, and an M.F.A. in Publication Design from the California Institute of the Arts, where she studied design with Sheila Levrant de Bretteville and photography with Ben Lifson. Ms. Friedman has taught Color Theory and Typography at the Corcoran School of Art, and Art Direction and Illustration at The Maryland Institute College of Art.
